James Dondero is the co-founder and the President of Highland Capital Management. Jim Dondero founded Highland Capital along with Mark Okada in January 1990. Highland started out as a joint venture with Protective Life Insurance Company in Los Angeles, Calif. The insurance firm moved to Dallas, Texas. In 1997, Dondero and Okada took on the name Ranger Asset Management, but the name was short-lived.
By 1998, the company was renamed Highland Capital Management that it continues to be known as more than 20 years later. Mr. Jim Dondero has more than 30 years of experience in credit and equity. Highland is offering products that include CLOs, Hedge Funds, private equity funds, mutual funds, REITs, and EFTs.
Jim Dondero graduated from the University of Virginia earning high honors; Beta Gamma Sigma, and Beta Alpha Psi from the McIntyre School of Commerce after graduating with a double major degree in accounting and finance. James Dondero’s a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant, and Chartered Financial Analyst. Dondero’s career in finance and equity began in 1984 as an analyst. Mr. Dondero was accepted into Morgan Guaranty’s training program right after he graduated from the University of Virginia’s School of Commerce. In 1985, Jim Dondero joined American Express becoming one of their corporate bond analysts. After being a portfolio manager for a while fixing $1 billion in fixed incomes, he left American Express in 1989. Dondero became the Chief Investment Officer at protective Life’s GIV subsidiary.
